Banksman & Slinger Stage 1 and 2

The Stage 1 Initial Training Program's goals are to give staff members who have little to no experience in the Banksman & Slinger function a foundational understanding of the tasks involved in the combined duties, as well as the safety and legal requirements of those tasks. The approved Banksman & Slinger Stage 1 Initial Training Standard specifies the Initial Training Programme for personnel wishing to become competent in the Banksman & Slinger role in the oil and gas industry. The candidate Banksman & Slinger must record the Stage 2 tasks in the logbook under the supervision of a competent person. Course overview

The aims and objectives of the Banksman and Slinger Stage 1 Initial Training Programme are to provide personnel, who have little or no experience of the Banksman & Slinger role, with the basic knowledge of activities associated with the combined roles, and the safety and regulatory requirements of those activities.

The Initial Training Programme allows the delegate to demonstrate basic Banksman & Slinger practical skills following instruction and demonstration by the training staff. This Training Programme aims to prepare the delegates for the next stage of the progression path to becoming a competent banksman & slinger i.e. Stage 2: supervised workplace experience.  

A logbook to record completion of the prescribed tasks must be given to the candidate by the training provider along with the approved Stage 1 Training certificate.   

What will I learn?

  • 1. Conducting pre-use and post-use checks of lifting appliances and accessories.
  • 2. Understanding the Lifting Equipment and Lifting Operations Regulations as they apply to the Banksman & Slinger role.
  • 3. Documentation and regulations that apply to lifting activities, and the importance of planning lifting activities.
  • 4. Hazards associated with lifting operations and the appropriate control measures.
  • 5. The roles and duties of personnel in a lifting crew, and the basic principles of crane operations.
  • 6. Common lifting appliances and accessories, as well as the lifting of personnel by crane for work and transfer purposes.
  • 7. The difference between SWL (Safe Working Load) and WLL (Working Load Limit) of lifting equipment, weight identification, and load estimation.
  • 8. Classification of lifts, i.e., routine and non-routine (simple, complicated, and complex).
  • 9. A typical permit-to-work system as it applies to lifting operations, deciding when taglines need to be used, and their safe use.
  • 10. Determining the load-bearing capabilities of the laydown area, and the correct positioning of personnel involved in lifting operations.
  • 11. Erecting signs and barriers or posting sentries, and the disposal of any waste in relation to legislation and procedures.
  • 12. The importance of the Banksman’s role, checking the cargo manifest, and reviewing the load.
  • 13. Checking the load for dropped objects, and ensuring balance and security of the load.
  • 14. Difficulties that might occur during lifting and moving operations.
  • 15. The need for high-visibility vests, and the importance of communicating hand signals clearly.
  • 16. Understanding ‘line of sight’ and ‘blind lift’, and the hand signal for ‘emergency stop’.
  • 17. Establishing and using two-way radio communications.
  • 18. Different types of slings and their identification markings.
  • 19. Principles of sling angles and tensions, and using appropriate lifting accessories.
  • 20. Attaching slings to ensure safe and even weight distribution.
  • 21. Protecting slings from damage, unhooking and removing slings, and disconnecting lifting equipment.
  • 22. Securing cargo within a container or half-height container using ratchet straps.
  • 23. Selection and use of correct PPE, and the use of hand signals and radio communications.
