Course overview

The training program is specialist in nature and designed to meet specific safety and emergency response competency needs of personnel working within the offshore oil and gas industry where there is a requirement for the use of helidecks, engaging in emergency helicopter operations, including compressed air emergency breathing systems (CA-EBS) during transportation to and from offshore locations by helicopter.

It covers the specific hazards and risks of the environment and focuses on the correct application of CA-EBS in an emergency. Students undergo an extensive training course in emergency procedures, evacuation, survival techniques, and medical response appropriate for an offshore environment.

Practical training exercises are based on scenarios that might arise in real life, with the view to be prepared for the most efficient response in an emergency. This program also covers the regulatory requirements and industry best practices in pursuit of compliance and safety culture. This program provides the underpinning knowledge and skills for personnel to competently respond to emergencies offshore, enhancing general safety standards and contributing to the well-being of personnel offshore.

What will I learn?

  • 1. Properly don an aviation transit suit, lifejacket, and CA-EBS equipment, conduct integrity and buddy checks, and ensure readiness for use.
  • 2. Deploy, operate, and breathe from a CA-EBS under atmospheric conditions.
  • 3. Prepare effectively for a helicopter ditching emergency landing and follow aircrew instructions.
  • 4. Locate and use CA-EBS equipment, perform dry evacuations through a nominated exit, and transition safely to an aviation life raft.
  • 5. Simulate in-water ditching preparation, including locating exits and deploying CA-EBS equipment under dry conditions at poolside.
  • 6. Evacuate from a helicopter ditched on water, operate a push-out window if required, assist others, and carry out initial life raft actions such as mooring, deploying the sea anchor, raising the canopy, and conducting maintenance.
  • 7. Escape through an underwater window opening from a partially submerged helicopter, both with and without push-out window operation.
  • 8. Escape from a capsized helicopter through an underwater window opening, without the use of a push-out window.
  • 9. Follow post-escape procedures, including inflating a lifejacket, deploying a spray visor, and performing in-water survival techniques such as swimming, the Heat Escape Lessening Position (HELP), towing, forming chains, huddles, and circles.
  • 10. Board an aviation life raft from the water and secure safety.
  • 11.Experience rescue by recognized offshore methods and understand survivor actions post-rescue.
