Course overview

Working in the oil and gas industry presents some of the biggest hazards around the world, such as the possibility of fire and explosions, and frequent injuries to hands and fingers. These injuries routinely represent a large proportion of incidents on the job, about 50% and sometimes 80% of the total events can be recorded.

Hands and fingers are vulnerable to hazards such as catching between objects, chemical exposure, vibrations, heat, cuts, bruises, scratches, burns, cracks, splits, cold conditions, and exposure to infectious agents. With a higher concentration of nerve endings and pain receptors, injuries to the hands and fingers are particularly excruciating compared to injuries to other parts of the body.

Hand and Finger Safety Guidelines are governed by several regulations:

  1. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132 (d) (I)
  2. OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart I, which covers Tools – Hand and Power
  3. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.212, which outlines Machine Guarding Requirements
  4. OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart I, which addresses Personal Protective Equipment
