The Offshore Helideck Assistant training program prioritizes providing individuals with the knowledge, understanding, and skills necessary to fulfill emergency response team member duties. This encompasses responding to diverse helideck firefighting as well as non-firefighting emergency situations in a safe training setting.
As essential members of the response team, helideck assistants help guarantee the safety of helicopter landings and departures in a variety of weather situations. They actively support the team's efforts to protect people, property, and the environment by managing crises that can arise during offshore activities.
Participants acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain safety standards in the demanding offshore environment and handle difficult situations through in-depth instruction and hands-on training, which promotes a preparedness and response ready culture.

- 1. Grasp the essential aspects of pertinent regulations and guidelines governing helideck operations.
- 2. Familiarize oneself with the physical attributes of helidecks.
- 3. Comprehend the requirements for ensuring obstacle-free conditions on helidecks.
- 4. Acquire knowledge about the equipment and systems employed on helidecks.
- 5. Understand the meteorological criteria necessary for helicopter operations offshore.
- 6. Recognize the typical hazards associated with helideck operations in offshore environments.
- 7. Demonstrate understanding of the identification, packaging, and labeling procedures for dangerous goods in accordance with IATA and ICAO regulations.
- 8. Define the responsibilities of the offshore Helideck Assistant (HDA).
- 9. Understand the typical duties of an HDA on a Normally Unattended Installation (NUI)
- 10. Explain the role and responsibilities of an HDA during helicopter operations.
- 11. Outline standard operating procedures before, during, and after helicopter landings and takeoffs.
- 12. Demonstrate proper use of handheld radios and adherence to communication protocols.
- 13. Assist the Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) with communication checks and equipment checks on the helideck.
- 14. Ensure compliance with designated positions during helicopter operations
- 15. Adhere to appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements during helicopter operations.
- 16. Under the direction of the HLO
- a. Load and unload passenger baggage correctly.
- b. Handle helicopter freight appropriately, adhering to manual handling techniques and freight loading restrictions.
- 17. Follow helideck protocols and procedures during helicopter operations.
- 18. Adhere to regulations concerning helicopter danger areas.
- 19. Aid passengers in safe boarding and disembarking from the helicopter on the helideck.
- 20. Identify hazardous materials during helicopter loading and unloading procedures.
- 21. Demonstrate awareness of refueling methods and safety precautions.
Requirements
- To enroll in the Helideck Assistant course, delegates must have completed a Dangerous Goods by Air training course as per the following standards:
- Part 1, Chapter 4 of the ICAO Technical Instructions,
- Subsection 1.5 of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (Category 7, 8, or 9).
- Alternatively, a state aviation-approved Dangerous Goods Awareness training course.
