Offshore Crane Operator Stage 2, conducted by Elite Offshore – is designed for all persons who work offshore, dockers who are exposed to offshore environment. The purpose and objectives of the OCO Stage 2 Competence Assessment is to demonstrate that the candidate has the necessary underpinning knowledge, understanding and skill to undertake the duties of a Stage 2 Offshore Crane Operator in a safe and efficient manner.

Course overview

The goal and objectives of the approved OCO Stage 2 competence reassessment are to confirm that the candidate has maintained the necessary competence, knowledge, and skills for the OCO Stage 2 position.

Note: Duty holders of fixed structures, floating structures, or vessels must ensure that Stage 2 OCOs are sufficiently familiarized with the specific type of offshore crane they will operate before conducting lifting operations.

B.1 OCO Stage 2 Competence Reassessment Target Group
The OCO Stage 2 Competence Reassessment is for personnel who wish to revalidate their certified OCO Stage 2 offshore crane operator competence certificate, or experienced Stage 2 offshore crane operators seeking to gain Stage 2 certification.

B.2 OCO Stage 2 Competence Reassessment Candidate Prerequisites
Candidates for the OCO Stage 2 Competence Reassessment must hold a valid, approved OCO Stage 2 Offshore Crane Operator Competence Certificate or a valid OCO Stage 2 non-certificate.

What will I learn?

  • 2. Hazards associated with working in oxygen-deficient, toxic, or flammable environments.
  • 3. Conducting a suitable and sufficient risk assessment.
  • 4. Interpreting operational requirements.
  • 5. Selecting and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE).
  • 6. Working within the Permit to Work system.
  • 7. Operating principles of atmosphere monitoring and measuring equipment.
  • 8. Performing pre-start checks on gas detectors.
  • 9. Calibrating instruments used in atmospheric testing.
  • 10. Understanding the behavior of different flammable and toxic gases.
  • 11. The range and frequency of gas tests.
  • 12. Acceptable levels of flammable and toxic gases.
  • 13. Performing gas tests in the correct sequence.
  • 14. Obtaining a representative atmosphere sample.
  • 15. Proper placement of ongoing monitoring equipment.
  • 16. Hot work and the production of flammable and toxic gases.
  • 17. Principles of hot work gas testing.
  • 18. Hazards and properties of flammable gases.
  • 19. Strengths and weaknesses of flammable and toxic gas detection equipment.
  • 20. Optimal placement of sentinel-style equipment (Fixed Gas Detectors).
  • 21. Detectors used for flammable products.
  • 22. Hot work and the creation of toxic products.
  • 23. How flammable gas or vapor clouds can reach the hot work site.
Requirements
  • An approved OCO Stage 1 Training certificate, or
  • An industry-recognized onshore crane operator certificate, or
  • A company certificate and relevant evidence which states that they have completed the equivalent of OPITO Offshore Crane Operator OCO Stage 1 Training within the last 12 months.
  • *The OCO Stage 1 certificate must be one year old or less.
